Your new system is live. But have your people changed how they work?
The platform is ready. Training is complete. Yet familiar workarounds remain.
This is the gap between implementation and adoption. Closing it means understanding what people need to work differently, then supporting them beyond go-live.
The COM-B model identifies three conditions for behaviour: capability, opportunity and motivation.[1] Skills matter. So do time, access, working conditions and reasons to change.
Ask: Can our people do this, does their environment support it, and what encourages them to keep doing it?
A 2025 conceptual paper on digital transformation argues that resistance can signal unmet needs, conflicting demands or organisational misalignment.[2]
Ask: What is making the new way of working difficult? The answer may call for clearer expectations, a better process or support at the point of need.
Completion tells you someone attended. To understand adoption, look at what happens next.
Ask: Are people using the new workflow? Are workarounds reducing? Are errors or processing times improving? Use these as practical indicators, alongside employee feedback.
At Digital Learning Partners, we help organisations bridge the gap between implementation and adoption. Through our DLP Digital Adoption Framework™, which includes Ready, Apply, Adopt, Sustain, we support capability discovery, adoption, performance improvement and measurement.
Technology enables change. People deliver it.
